The Central Museum of Art (Musée Central des Arts) was opened to the public at the Grande Galerie during the French Revolution. He transferred his court to the Versailles Palace in year 1682. Louis XIV was the last king to use the Louvre as a royal residence. Then each of the French kings completed a part of the palace The Louvre Palace was built in the 12th century by Philip II as a fortress to protect the city from British troops.įrancis I, demolished this 12th century castle to build a huge palace.Ĭonstruction began in the mid 1500th century, but only part of the palace was completed. In the distant past the Louvre was actually a palace. The museum has 48 firefighters who are on standby around the clock. 1200 persons of these are security agents.
